The high safety rating comes from the AcuraWatch system, which has a collision mitigation braking system, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, and road departure mitigation. Now what does all of this mean?
Collision mitigation braking system:
The braking system has three stages. The initial braking stage is a flashing of lights and sounds when the car senses that there may be a potential accident. When this potential accident grows even more than the car will start to pull the seat belt and slowly start braking the car. If an accident is about to happen, the car will pull the seatbelt tight and force the vehicle to brake hard. When the system starts to have problems the car itself will notify you. So there is nothing to worry about! However this is only a safety feature, it will not work 100% of the time and the driver should still be focused on the road.
Lane keeping assistance:
The system is to try and assist the driver to keep them in the middle of a lane. I have driven some other vehicles that have this system and they also work on some winding roads. So the system itself is amazing in how it works. When the car senses that it starts to move from the center of the lane it will apply torque to move the car back to the center. The amount of torque that it applies is different depending on how off center it is. Great for first time drivers that are still trying to learn on where to drive on a lane. This however is not a substitute for steering in general. The system will not work if there are not any hands on the steering wheel.
Adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow:
It is a cruise control feature that helps someone maintain their cruise speed and can detect vehicles ahead and can also bring the vehicle to a stop and resume following again. This can help if you are on a long drive and a vehicle in front is exiting or there is an accident and there is traffic. Just like the Collision mitigation braking system the driver should always be focused on the road and be conscious of any dangers that may be around the, while driving.
Road departure mitigation:
It is pretty much another feature to help you keep the car in the lane. Unlike the lane keeping assistance which will forcibly push the car back to the center of the lane. The road departure mitigation system will let you know audibly and visually that you are steering out of the lane. So it works together with the lane keeping system.
